GDIF general thoughts

Jump to: navigation, search

The idea of the Gesture Description Interchange Format (GDIF) was conceived by Alexander Refsum Jensenius when he was a visiting researcher at McGill University in 2005. The first publication on GDIF was at NIME 2006 (PDF). Please see Google Scholar for an updated list of GDIF-related publications.

What's in a name?

The GDIF name is somewhat misleading, since GDIF development is really not about creating a format per se, but rather to work out a taxonomy for storing and streaming music-related movement data in a coherent and consistent manner. There are certainly some technical challenges involved, but at the moment it seems like the conceptual challenges are greater.

The G in GDIF is also misleading, since GDIF is not only describing gestures (i.e. meaningful actions), but also raw data of motion and action features.
